Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya are two popular sons of Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati. Idols of both the sons are commonly placed with Shiva & Parvati. But, only a few people are known to the third child of Shiva & Parvati, namely Ashokasundari – the daughter of Shiva & Parvati.
Lord Shiva and Parvati have three children amongst which Kartikeya is the eldest son, Ashokasundari is the middle daughter, and Ganesha is the youngest son.
According to the Padam Purana, the story of the incarnation of Ashokasundari goes thus; once Parvati felt quite lonely and gloomy due to the separation pangs of her elder son Kartikeya who was out for the war with demons. Coincidentally, during those days – Lord Shiva was also engrossed in his meditation which increased her loneliness. To vanish away her loneliness, Parvati went to the Kalpavriksha – a divine tree which fulfils wishes and wished for a daughter. Her wish was granted and Ashokasundari born thus to delight Parvati. Ashokasundari was named after her birth qualities in which Ashoka implies no sorrow and Sundari implies beautiful. The beautiful & virtues daughter of Shiva & Parvati and sister of Kartikeya & Ganesha sported about with them till her youth and then got married to Nahusha who was equal to Indra.
Ashokasundari is not quite popular as other members of the Shiva family, but she is duly worshipped in South India and is popular as Bala Tripurasundari.
